meshon_a-1-french-onsen.jpg「Dear Friends of Japan, I love Japan. I love the people, the nature, the food, the small streets, the cicadas in the summer and the snowfalls in the winter. I love the cool waterfalls in the Alps and the hot spring villages in the valleys. Please know that so many people around the world have been thinking of Japan and I can't wait to come back to my second home again soon. I know Japan will be stronger and more beautiful then ever! Love your friend, Aaron

Born 1977 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Alyssa Monks began oil painting as a child. She studied at The New School in New York and Montclair State University and earned her B.A. from Boston College in 1999. During this time she studied painting at Lorenzo de’Medici in Florence. She went on to earn her M.F.A from the New York Academy of Art, Graduate School of Figurative Art in 2001. She completed an artist in residency at Fullerton College in 2006 and has lectured at universities and institution nation wide. She has taught Flesh Painting at the New York Academy of Art, as well as Montclair State University and the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.

Monks’ paintings explore the tension between abstraction and realism, using different filters to visually distort and disintegrate the body. In this shallow painted space, the subject is pushing against our real space. Strokes of thick paint in delicate color relationships are pushed and pulled to imitate glass, steam, water and flesh. “When I began painting the human body, I was obsessed with it and needed to create as much realism as possible. I chased realism until it began to unravel and deconstruct itself,” Alyssa states, “Realism and Abstraction are in a symbiotic relationship – they need each other to exist and eventually become the same.”

Monks' paintings have been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions including "Intimacy" at the Kunst Museum in Ahlen, Germany and "Reconfiguring the Body in American Art, 1820–2009" at the National Academy Museum of Fine Arts, New York. Her work is represented in public and private collections, including the Savannah College of Arts, the Somerset Art Association and the collections of Howard Tullman, Danielle Steele and Eric Fischl.

Alyssa has been awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant for Painting three times and is a member of the New York Academy of Art's Board of Trustees. She is currently represented by David Klein Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan. Alyssa currently lives and paints in Brooklyn, New York.

The work of the Oberholzer-Tagli graphic studio can be emblematically described in the words Sabina and Renato used in a recent interview: “Confronting the small community of Cevio in the Vallemaggia, and simultaneously sustaining a jointly based dialogue with New York, Singapore, Cologne, Milan, Locarno and Ascona and the rest of Switzerland while giving our graphic work a precise identity. Twenty years ago this was a unique challenge. Today, naturally, all this has become much easier, but maybe we can set ourselves a new challenge: to work with simplicity and austerity, isolating and eliminating the superfluous, the redundant, the artificial and whatever else makes graphical design, whether created in Moscow or Los Angeles, in Tokio or Madrid, seem uniform and repetitive.
Meeting today’s challenge means to restore a specific identity to our work by becoming stringently essential and so escape global uniformity.
For this and because of this we continue to work in Cevio.”

My hope, which is already a certainty, is that this "crisis" will turn into an "opportunity" to growth, to become a positive change for Japan.
My hope is that Japan perceives the love of the whole world his brave and strong people.
My three posters at last can only do this: to make the Japaneses feel that we trust in them, and that we all are joined together...
Hoping that a flurry of positive energy from all over the world will reach Japan and help him to get up , stronger than before.

Ecuador

I was born in Quito in February 1972.
With 18 years’ professional experience in Ecuador, I have formed a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to corporate image and editorial design projects, working on a wide-range of important works on the national stage.
My main aim has been to transcend whimsy, fashion and global trends – which invade our third-world country with their cutting-edge technologies and rapid access to information – laying down technical parameters for design and revaluing a visual language, which can only be communicated through identity, while providing efficient solutions for every type of client.
Our projects have achieved consistent results and unique products through research and the reification of Ecuadorian visual elements, colour and shapes which compliment the formal and ordered philosophy of design.
My passion for design has led me to work for the profession and its promotion within Ecuador and abroad. I have been an active participant in the Ecuadorian Graphic Designers’ Association, as Vice-President from 1996-8 and President from 2003-5.
Pachanga as my main project has achieved several recognitions around the world.

The Japanese and eastern aesthetic has been a major influence on my career and life. For a very long time the vision and insights of Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi have been a particular inspiration to me.

They taught me where to look for feeling and truth, in myself and my work. Many of your great artists and designers are so knowing in the truest sense. As an acknowledgement to you all I have taken a beautiful quote from Hamada and created this poster in his and your honour.

I live in two worlds. One is real and the second one is an alternative created from the negative of bad qualities of the real world. The second one is of higher value for me.
It is my mirror or my picture. It is changing by the incessant self - control, it is developing.
I am closing myself into this world little by little, maybe voluntarily, maybe as necessity,
because this world is better and more perfect than the real one. It is nor pragmatic, logical,
nor intolerancy or superficial. There is nothing to explain, it is filled by fantasy, absurd situations and play. Sometimes it is determined by the real world, then also violence and evil can appear in it. I use it as a mirror of the real world. I discover my world slowly, it is impossible to discover it at once.
And when I find something, soon it is changed. It is an exciting adventure. It is a touch of
transcendent. I discover strange situations, surreal pictures, unexpected relationships. Sometimes it is just an idea, sudden gleam, other time just a feeling. Sometimes it is built up as a mosaic into the inexplicable picture, that can be percieved only by subconscience. Sometimes I mediate something from it, but the most beautiful picture I have in my head. This world has been developing continuosly, something from it remains forever, something changes all the time. It shows me the way. My existency becomes a motions between my world and the real world. It is the motion between sky and earth. More and more often I find myself just in my own world feeling intuitively that I do not belong into the real world anymore. I do not know whether I shall ever return…

And they simply never give up. I don’t think I’ve ever known a people with the perseverance of the Japanese.
The most recent devastationfrom the massive earthquake, tsunami and radiation-‐leaking Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has once again tested their will. As painful as it is to watch these wonderful people suffer through this catastrophic event, I am convinced that they will rise again, like the phoenix, and soar to even greater heights.

私は日本の皆様のことが大好きです!知的かつ創造的で工夫に富み、温かく愛敬のある人々です。そして何より、簡単には諦めないのです。日本人ほど忍耐力のある人々を私は他に知りません。

About Woody Pirtle and Pirtle Design
Woody Pirtle established Pirtle Design in Dallas, Texas in
1978. Over the next ten years the firm produced some of the most
celebrated graphic design work of the decade. During that period,
the office created identity programs and marketing materials for
Baylor University Medical Center, The Dallas Museum of Art,
TGI Friday’s, Dallas Opera, Diamond Shamrock Corporation,
National Gypsum, Centex Homes, Gerald D. Hines Interests,
Simpson Paper Company and NCR to name a few.
In 1988 Woody merged Pirtle Design with Pentagram, the
international design consultancy founded in London in 1972. For
eighteen years Woody was a partner in the New York office of
Pentagram and helped build it into the powerhouse it is today.
Between 1988 and 2005, Woody and the office of Pentagram
produced work for Brown-Forman Wine and Spirits, Bacardi
Global Brands, The Port Authority of New York, The Museum of
Natural History, Murray’s Cheese, IBM, Champion International
Corporation, Fine Line Features, Citigroup, The Rockefeller
Foundation, Nine West, Northern Telecom, Knoll International,
Wellesley College, Princeton University, Brooklyn Law School,
and Amnesty International, plus many others.
In 2005 Woody left Pentagram to re-establish Pirtle Design.
Today, Pirtle Design continues to provide unparalleled design and
consulting services that run the gamut of business and cultural
endeavors, producing work for a diverse range of national and
international clients.
Because of its simple structure and lean profile, Pirtle Design is
able to retain the entrepreneurial spirit and creative freedom
necessary for producing fresh, original work. As a shareholder of
Pentagram, Woody continues to have access to the staff and
Partners in the New York office, and is able to collaborate when
larger projects require a greater depth of resources or
interdisciplinary support.
The firm’s organization assures the best of both worlds for its
clients: like a small private firm, the highest ranking officer in the
organization (the principle) is intimately involved in the strategic
design development and communicates directly with the client;
like a large international firm, it maintains a sophisticated support
structure and has a wide-ranging network of professional
resources.
Recent projects include: identity and website development for the New
York based international law firm Wachtel Lipton Rosen & Katz,
identity and signage for the Addison Gallery of American Art at
Phillips Academy in Andover Massachusetts, identity programs for the
American Folk Art Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art,
Brooklyn Ballet Company, Rizzoli International, Callaway Golf,
Amnesty International, The Hudson Valley Preservation Commission,
Sustainable Hudson Valley, Walkway Over the Hudson, international
publisher Graphis and The William Stafford Center in Portland Oregon.
Woody’s work has been exhibited worldwide and is in the permanent
collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Cooper-Hewitt National
Design Museum in New York, The Albany Institute of History and Art
in Albany, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Neue
Sammlung Museum in Munich, and the Zurich Poster Museum. He has
taught at the School of Visual Arts, lectured extensively, is a member
of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, and has served on the board
of HOW magazine, Sustainable Hudson Valley, Walkway Over the
Hudson and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In October 2003 he
was awarded the prestigious AIGA Medal for his career contribution to
the design profession.
